RC scale explained: read the dimensions

RCCritic is research-led: we use maker data and published sources. We have not done hands-on tests yet.

There is no single length for every 1/10 model. Read the maker’s length, width and wheelbase for the exact vehicle.

What does an RC scale ratio mean?

A scale ratio compares a model with the full-size vehicle it represents. A 1/10 scale model is nominally one-tenth that reference size; the reference vehicle is part of the meaning.

A truck and a buggy can share a scale label while having different dimensions. Horizon’s scale guide explicitly notes that scale alone is not an exact indication of model size. Treat it as a category label to investigate, not a substitute for a size table.

Why is the 1/24 model longer than the 1/18 model here?

The catalogue lists 225 mm for the SCX24 Base Camp and 218 mm for the Ascent-18. Those figures come from the exact maker records, so the chart keeps them even though the scale labels suggest a different order.

The chart scales bar width from published length, with no adjustment to force a preferred order. Body style, reference vehicle and product naming can differ. We do not treat the maker’s scale label as a physical measurement.

Which dimensions matter when planning a driving space?

Start with overall length and width, then examine wheelbase and the maker’s operating guidance. Wheelbase is the distance between the front and rear axle centres, not the overall body length.

Our suggested planning step is to mark the vehicle footprint on the floor before buying. That shows its storage footprint, not a safe driving area. Allow room for control mistakes and keep people clear as directed by the vehicle instructions.

How should you compare maker dimension fields?

Compare the same named field and keep the exact model code beside it. Do not silently substitute track width, wheel width or battery-tray length for overall dimensions.

The SCX10 III Base Camp table has a 235 mm Product Width field and a 233 mm track field. Our sheet uses the named Product Width. The Kraton response labels 377 mm as wheel width; we leave its wheelbase blank instead of correcting that label by inference.

Which sources support this page?

Use the exact model code when checking a maker page. The read date is a record of our research, not a promise that a listing stays unchanged.
