Brushless vs brushed RC motors

RCCritic is research-led: we use maker data and published sources. We have not done hands-on tests yet.

The way the motor switches current changes. Choose the motor and electronic speed control as a compatible system, then check the battery limits.

How do brushed and brushless motors differ?

A brushed motor uses physical brushes and a commutator to switch current through its coils. A brushless system moves that switching task to electronic control.

That changes which speed controller can drive the motor. An electronic speed control, or ESC, is the unit that controls motor power from the throttle signal. Check the motor type against the ESC instructions before connecting them. A connector that physically fits does not establish electrical compatibility.

What does motor kV mean?

Motor kV means revolutions per minute per volt under no load. It describes a speed constant; it is not a kilovolt rating, a torque figure or a promise of vehicle speed.

For an illustrative 3100 kV motor at 11.1 V, multiplication gives 34,410 rpm before load. Wheel speed also depends on total gear reduction and tire diameter. The runtime and speed calculator exposes those inputs so you can see what changing one assumption does.

Does brushless mean a car will suit your use?

No. A motor label cannot describe the space you have, the terrain or your ability to control the vehicle. Start with those requirements, then check the complete power system.

The SCX24 Base Camp uses a brushed crawler motor. The Granite 223S uses a brushless system with support for two battery cell counts. Those are different use cases and package sizes, not a head-to-head performance result.

What should you check before changing motors?

Read the motor and ESC limits together. Confirm motor type, supported voltage, connector, mounting dimensions and gearing before choosing parts.

Our suggested sequence is to identify the exact model code, find its maker instructions and make a list of every affected part. Leave a specification blank if the maker does not print it. Do not substitute an ESC current limit for average battery draw when estimating runtime.

Next: read the battery guide.

Which sources support this page?

Use the exact model code when checking a maker page. The read date is a record of our research, not a promise that a listing stays unchanged.
