RC planes, boats & drones

RCCritic is research-led: we use maker data and published sources. We have not done hands-on tests yet.

Air and water need their own vehicles, space and safety checks.

Which RC planes help a beginner learn?

A trainer’s stability modes can help with orientation. HobbyZone describes SAFE flight assistance on the Apprentice STOL S, Sport Cub S 2 and Carbon Cub S 2. Read each manual for beginner modes, recovery functions, wind limits and setup; none makes a model autonomous.

RTF means ready-to-fly, but “RTF Basic” can omit battery and charger. Learn with an instructor at a permitted site.

Which RC boat features matter first?

Jet Jam V2 is a pool racer; Recoil 2 18-inch lists self-righting and a brushless system. Blackjack 24 V2 is a different catamaran package; do not assume it self-rights. Check the exact manual for water type, sealing and maintenance.

Use permitted water clear of swimmers, animals and full-size boats. Plan recovery from shore. Never swim after a stranded model.

What FAA rules apply to recreational flyers?

For US recreational flying, the FAA requires TRUST completion and proof of passage. Registration is generally required for aircraft weighing 250 g or more. Registered aircraft generally need Remote ID unless an exception such as operation in a FRIA applies. Keep visual line of sight and follow airspace rules; a lightweight aircraft still has operating rules.

Read the official FAA recreational flyer requirements and linked registration rules before flying. Source read 2026-11-04. These requirements can change; our car database does not establish a legal flying location.

Which sources support this page?

Use the exact model code when checking a maker page. The read date is a record of our research, not a promise that a listing stays unchanged.
